Narrative: Yesterday I used what I harvested to put some fresh salad into our fajitas and prepare a good focaccia with the dill and tomatoes.

We will use today’s fresh spinach harvest to cook the famous ‘cream spinach’ recipe you can find in the MDRS cookbook!

In the GreenHab today less work was required, but what a pleasure it is to water and maintain crops every day. The bean I planted few days ago is already popping out, and it feels great to see that.

There wasn’t that much sun today, so it wasn’t hot in there, but plants still needed to be well watered.

My aquaponics system is doing really well, apart from the parsley that doesn’t really like it, I can clearly notice how faster than usual plants grow.

Harvest: 161 g of spinach, 1.138 kg of tomatoes, 7 g of basil

Changes to crops: I followed the instructions given by Shannon and took care of the dill and greens. I then cut the dills and pulled half of it. I harvested the greens in the planters and replanted new seeds.

Narrative: Today, I had more workload than usual but for the better! This morning I was the HabCom for today’s EVA so it was the crew astronomer and crew journalist who watered the plants and crops in the morning.

But many things were to be done, so I went back to the GreenHab in the afternoon. Then, I began by watering plants and crops to ensure their well-being. And finally, I started harvesting greens, lettuce, kale, and dills with the help of the HSO.

We took care of the dills and after a long work we finished and replanted new greens seeds.

Harvest: 102 g of kale, 254 g of greens, 30 g of lettuce, 124 g of dill

Narrative: Today was our rest day, but the GreenHab doesn’t rest so I maintained and watered crops and plants as usual.

I will harvest the greens tomorrow for sure, we will use them to cook some recipes written by pupils with whom we worked before leaving the Earth!

Just to inform you, I noticed that there were chives growing in the carrot tank, I do not know which crew planted chive seeds in there, but it seems that it is now growing well!

I also want to affirm the supplemental light is off and that sunshades have been deployed. As there is no 40% sunshade but only 30%, 50%, and 60%, I deployed the 30% on the left side and the 50% on the right side, as shown on yesterday’s photographs I sent.

Besides that, the plants are doing good, fishes too.

The GreenHab is a peaceful place where everything looks, smells, and tastes heavenly…

Harvest: N/A

Support/supplies needed: I would like some advice to know exactly when you think plants are too tall and I must cut them, we wouldn’t want a jungle of tomato plants and dills.

Average Temperature: 83.7 °F

Average humidity: 28 %

Hours of supplemental light: 0 hour

Changes to crops: Planted a bean seed in a pot containing a single bean plant.

Narrative: Like yesterday, I was on an EVA this morning, so it was once again the HSO that watered and maintained plants and crops.

I went to check on it during the afternoon and decided to water them again since it was hot in there.

I also had the pleasure to see that there were even more tomatoes to harvest!

As I said in a previous report, I was waiting for a good moment to harvest them, and this moment arrived.

I saw there was a bean that was too mature to be eaten, I then decided to take the beans inside and plant two of them in two pots containing only one bean plant.

Harvest: 1.541 kg of tomatoes

Changes to crops: N/A

Narrative: Today’s morning I was on an EVA so it was the HSO that watered and maintained the plants and crops.

I, however, went to water them again in the afternoon.

Everything looks good and there is nothing to signal.

So far everything goes to plan, and crops are doing good. We could say, so far so good!

Harvest: N/A

Support/supplies needed: There is a thermal insulation on the GreenHab floor, I do not know if it belongs there. A crew member asked me if it is okay to use a little bit of it to insulate a battery for our scientific instrument or does it belong to the GreenHab for a Sun-related purpose?

GreenHab Report – February 23th

GreenHab Officer: Adrien Tison

Environmental control: Heater

Average Temperature: 74.5 °F

Average humidity: 27 %

Time(s) of watering for crops: 13:34

Changes to crops: N/A

Narrative: Nothing special to signal today, it was a pretty common day.

I maintained and watered plants and crops as my daily operations and checked everything to be sure everything is doing well. In the next few days there will be a really nice amount of tomatoes, they are soon to be harvested!

I also took care of my Microgreens experiment and added water to the fish tank as it has lowered a bit since the beginning.

GreenHab Report – February 22th

GreenHab Officer: Adrien Tison

Environmental control: Heater

Average Temperature: 65.4 °F

Average humidity: 31 %

Hours of supplemental light: 0 hour

Daily water usage for crops: 10.57 gallons

Daily water usage for research and/or other purposes: 0 gallons

Water in the blue tank: 76.0 gallons

Time(s) of watering for crops: 9:24 & 14:47

Changes to crops: N/A

Narrative: This morning I watered and maintained crops and plants as my daily activities.

There were some dry leaves on some tomato plants, but overall, everything looks great. Plants have grown well and look good.

The dry leaves are located just where the heater hit, so we can assume that it is the heater that dries the leaves.

What I harvested allowed us to cook a nice meal, beginning with a couscous and finishing with a nice mint tea!

Harvest: 65g of beans, 3g of mint, and 2g of thyme

GreenHab Report – February 21th

GreenHab Officer: Adrien Tison

Environmental control: Heater

Average Temperature: 75.4 °F

Average humidity: 20 % (with our sensor near the walkie-talkie, the old sensor detects 7% there)

Hours of supplemental light: 4 hours

Daily water usage for crops: 10.46 gallons

Daily water usage for research and/or other purposes: 0 gallons

Water in the blue tank: 86.57 gallons

Time(s) of watering for crops: 9:10 & 15:00

Changes to crops: N/A

Narrative: This morning I was the habcom for today’s EVA, so I was not able to go in the GreenHab, but our crew scientist went to perform daily activities.

She watered and maintained crops and plants in the morning, and I went to check on it in the afternoon.

Our environmental sensors have been deployed, I was then able to double-check the humidity and indeed the old sensor underestimate the real value. I will now use the value given by our environmental sensors.

As advised, I unplugged the supplemental light, and I will watch if it doesn’t bother the plants.

Besides that, everything grows fast and well!

As I came back, I went to check on it at 13:57. Everything is in place and doing well.

I began our Microgreens experiment by taking two pots and planting new microgreens to monitor their growth.

Our environmental sensors have just been deployed so I will be able to double-check the humidity tomorrow.

Apart from that, nothing special to signal, everything looks fine!

GreenHab Report – February 19th

GreenHab Officer: Adrien Tison

Environmental control: Heater

Average Temperature: 96.5 °F (at 12:00) & 77.9 °F (in the afternoon)

Average humidity: 14 % (to be double-checked)

Hours of supplemental light: 4 hours

Daily water usage for crops: 13.74 gallons

Daily water usage for research and/or other purposes: 0 gallons

Water in the blue tank: 108.23 gallons

Time(s) of watering for crops: 12:34 & 16:55

Changes to crops: N/A

Narrative: Yesterday, at 23:00 I noticed that the supplemental light wasn’t on, so I went to check on it and it seems like the timer was late. I then put the timer back on track.

When I entered the greenhab today, I was struck by how hot it was, indeed it was 96°F. Hopefully plants and crops were not too dry, but it was blatant they needed more water than usual.

To drop the temperature, I decided to attach the sunshade 50% on the right side and 30% on the left side. This way, the sun didn’t hit as much, and the temperature decreased.

After all of that, I maintained and watered crops and plants as my daily operations and got to harvest a whole lot of tomatoes!

Harvest: 305g of tomatoes
