Additional Greenhab officer narrative:

“The Garden of MDRS”
Kai Takeda – Crew Biologist

Greenhab as a wonderful garden on Mars.

Today, more than one week in my journey in MDRS, I’ve got used to reporting my activities in the garden using radios every single day.
Crew191 ASIA TEAM stay together in the Hab, and become isolated in such as small place and can not go out without space suit.
I know that stay in the small space might be makes a bit stress but, I realize that my activities to taking care of the garden every single day reduce my sad feeling :
For example, harvesting vegetables in the garden and taking them back to the Hab for lunch or dinner.
And also, each time im back to the Hab from the garden, my crewmates say “welcomeback” to me.
This is kind of privilege of GreenHab officer.

I’ve been interested on plants since I was in junior high school.
I also interested in relationship between human and plants and try to do a research about that subject.
For me, plants could be create an open feelings for human like what I feel during stay in MDRS.
I really want to know how plants change our feeling just by having contact with them directly.
And now I have a plan to have a “PLANT DAY” with my crewmates in MDRS.
I really hope that I can make realization from this idea.

10:23 – Finish for recording process
10:27 – Leave the site
10:42 – Arrive
10:48 – Enter the airlock
10:51 – EVA end

Narrative:
EVA today was a Recording Signal from the DIY Analog Signal Receiver with another version of antenna
We explored to URC South Site area and found a good place for the project.
This project had a title : Space Weather Impacts On Climate,
: means that all weather on Earth, from the surface of the planet out into space, begins with the Sun. Space weather and terrestrial weather (the weather we feel at the surface) are influenced by the small changes the Sun undergoes during its solar cycle. Space Weather impacts numerous facets of everyday life, from where airplanes can safely fly, to how accurately a farmer plows his field. In addition, there are a large variety of phenomena that are driven by the variability of the sun over periods ranging from hours to years. The most important impact the Sun has on Earth is from the brightness or irradiance of the Sun itself. By build an antenna we can get specific signal that will received by this Analog Signal Receiver.
As a result, we will analyze all signal and frequencies we got from today and will have a visualization from those signal.

Sol 10
Yusuke Murakami (Commander)

After the EVA #9 team had left the HAB, Yusuke and Makoto started an operational EVA with a brush, towels, cleaner, and water for washing. We had already put the contaminated white tank inside the RAM on SOL9. As you know “RAM” is an abbreviation of the “Repair and Assembly Module”, but it never used as a purpose. So, today is the Memorial Day of RAM! Yusuke and Makoto got down into the tank only with underwear and cleaned it. Sometime they need to put their head out of a narrow mouth of the tank for breathing as a seal. We couldn’t complete cleaning the tank during this EVA, but almost done. The operation never realized without RAM. Thanks RAM!!!
Related to the water problem, we also cleaned up the water pump. So we are in progress of preparing for the clean water to our HAB now.
In EVA #9, Venzha did recording for his project CMEs again, but in another place and setting in another way. As a result, he was able to get very different sound from last time.

EVA #10 – 2 Apr 2018 – Sol9
Crew members: Yusuke Murakami (EVA leader), Fumiei Morisawa, Makoto Kawamura

Objectives:

– Empty the water of the white tank and move to the RAM

Operations:
10:37 – Entering the airlock
10:40 – Operational EVA start
11:17 – Entering into RAM’s Airlock
11:20 – Entering RAM
11:21 – Open the shutter of RAM
11:29 – Put the white tank inside RAM
11:36 – Entering the airlock of the HAB
11:39 – Entering the HAB

Narrative:
This morning we decided to cancel EVA#9 (Venzha’s CEMs Project) because we had the water tank problems. After the daily operational check, we checked and sampled the water inside the white tank and the black tank. Shannon had already pumped out almost all of the water this morning, we fully emptied the water from the white tank. After that we measured the size of the tank and also the shutter of the RAM. It seemed that the tank could be pass into the RAM through the shutter. So we tried it, and did it. So now we got a choice to clean the tank without breaking the SIM later on.

Sol 09
Miho Tsukishiro (XO)

This morning we have decided our EVA #9, because we have to solve the water pollution in the HAB. Since we found some white unknown material in the white tank yesterday, we can not use the water anymore, which already in the HAB water system.
The solution we took without breaking our SIM: request supply of clean water for two days, and clean up the tanks meanwhile.
So we checked and got some sample of water from the tanks and brought the empty but still contaminated white tank into the RAM today, so that we can clean it up during following EVA.
