Sol Summary – May 6th

Hiya, CapCom!

Glad to have you too.

Crew 212 Sol 1 Summary Report 6-MAY-2019

Sol: 1

Summary Title: Exploring martian territory.

Author’s name: Marlen Castillo Vilcahuaman

Mission Status: Two EVAs today. That’s tiring!

Sol Activity Summary: Crew 212’s first day on Mars! Commander reports some colon problems (no questions, please, she’ll just need more veggies). EVAs were done. Now we have an idea of how much time takes the pre-EVA process. That’ll help us in the future.

Look Ahead Plan: More science during EVAs.

Anomalies in work: We have lamp issues (check the operations report)

Weather: Sunny at 8 a.m. Kinda fresh at 3 p.m. For the late EVA, it was still sunny and windy.

Crew Physical Status: So far, no accidents.

EVA: 2 EVAs today. Please, find attached the EVAs report for more info.

Reports to be file: Operations Report, GreenHab Report, Journalist Report, HSO Report, Daily Photo Report (not zipped), EVA Request, Space Suit Report, Astronomy Report.

Support Requested: None.

Additional notes: Hope you’re drinking something nice today! Maybe water or lemonade?

Operations Report – May 5th

Crew 212 Operations Report 05-MAY-2019

SOL: 0

Name of person filing report: Paolo Guardabasso

Non-nominal systems: Loft pump

Notes on non-nominal systems: The loft pump in the Hab is leaking
badly, and water penetrated the wooden floor down in the commander’s
room. The leaking is due to parts of the pump not being completely
fixed to each other and is triggered mainly by vibrations during
activity; water both drops on the wooden floor but also sprays upwards
close to electrical connections.

Journalist Report – May 5th

Good Evening,

Today was our second day at MDRS. Our day today consisted of training and settling into the HAB station.

Our crew deep cleaned the HAB and took full inventory of the food and also the Greenhab produce. Here we saw that there are numerous plants ready to be harvested, we hope to use the carrots over the next couple of days.

Afterwards we did a water run in Hanksville, we will return tonight for the second water run.

Finally we undertook Rover training and went out with Shannon to URC North Site, all crew members drove and turned the rovers.

Tonight we will eat a final meal at Hankville before entering SIM tomorrow.

We look forward to the start of the simulation.
Regards,

1. Solar Observation/Astrophotography/Stellar Clusters: The procedure of turning on the MUSK telescope and the dome has been successfully tested. Observations of a galaxy were made with the deep sky objects robotic telescope.

2. X-5: Drones were disassembling for transportation to MDRS: 2 on 3 drones already assembled. Calibration performed. Manual test of 2 on 3 drones scheduled for SOL-3.

3. VESTA: Performing a repair in the landing gear of the drone. First flight test scheduled for May, 09 (SOL 4).

4. Observation Rover: The EVA for today May, 7 (SOL 2) was canceled due to the weather.. A part of the Rover got missing in transit from Grand Junction to MDRS. Critical Component. Solution needed ASAP: Stablish contact with UK.

5. Space Farming: Experiment in standby due to the lack of an operational autoclave. Solution: Dr. Shannon Rupert has explained how to sterilize using a hotplate, alcohol, and bleach.

6. Keep Talking: First round already performed. Subsequent rounds already scheduled.

7. Ethnography study: First observation started yesterday (SOL-1). Waiting for sending audio-information to receive the feedback from the Colombian team project.

8. Pulse Oximeter Measurement: First measurement made yesterday. Data recorded.

9. Software for macroscopic characterization: Code for detecting counts in progress. There is an issue with detecting the petri dish. Solution: process more photographs needed (soil bacteria growing in plates).

Notes on non-nominal systems: The pump is leaking (see previous reports) and today it started turning on automatically every 7 seconds. The Director informed me that this is because the pump tries to compensate the losses due to the leaking.

Crew 212 GreenHab Report – 7-May-2019: SOL-2

GreenHab Officer: Hector Palomeque

Environmental control: Ambient with door open from 07:00 to 14:00 + fan turned on in minimum (1) from 11:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 16:30 (3.5 h)

Shade cloth 80%: on

Average temperatures:

Low: 20.7° C (±0.81)

High: 38.6° C (±1.65)

Daily water usage for crops: 5 gallons + 2 gallons

Water in Blue Tank: 173 gallons

Time(s) of watering for crops: 07:00 + 19:00

Changes to crops: All plants look healthy. Chard and +20 Carrots ready to harvest. Basil is blooming.

Narrative: Plants were watered two times. It was necessary to close the GreenHab door because of the strong wind. The fan has been turned on (at minimum level) when the GreenHab reached almost 40°C.

Due to the Indoor thermometer of the GreenHab seems to being uncalibrated, an observational experiment was performed during the day: the information of 5 different indoor thermometers were recollected every hour. Then, the average temperature of every hour was calculated. Tomorrow another run of the experiment will be performed.

Harvested: 5g Basil + 1g Sage

Support/supplies needed: None.

EVA report – May 07th

Crew 212 EVA Report 06-MAY-2019

EVA #01

Author: Paolo Guardabasso

Purpose of EVA: First test of EVA equipment and procedures in Marble Ritual

Start time: 09:00 AM

End time: 09:55 AM

Narrative: This first EVA was intended as an introduction to external activities for part of the crew (another one followed in the late afternoon). After a 5 minutes depressurization in the main airlock, four members of the crew went outside the HAB and tested the suits (in terms of comfort and mobility) and the communication systems (communication between EVA members, with the HAB, comfort of communication devices and comm protocols). The custom handset for long-range communication that was planned to be tested during this EVA proved faulty, so the traditional radios were used. Then we disconnected the rovers Opportunity and Curiosity and drove to the designated location for about 5 minutes; we parked along the road and explored the region of Marble Ritual, going around the small elevated hill South of the site. We observed a peculiar structure that turned out to be an ant hill with a closer inspection. We walked back to the rovers and returned to the habitat in about 5 minutes, where the rovers were parked and connected to the charger. Once in the airlock, one of the suit’s fans appeared to be malfunctioning, but it was verified that the switch was turned off accidentally whilst leaving from the rover, suggesting that additional protection of the switch might be required. After 5 minutes of pressurization, the EVA was considered successfully completed. Pictures were taken during the mission, and some will be included in the pics of the day. The long-range comm system has been repaired and was tested in the second EVA of the day.

Destination: Marble Ritual

Coordinates (use UTM NAD27 CONUS): N4250800 E518700 Sector 12S

Participants: Paolo Guardabasso (Commander), Vittorio Netti (Medic), Hector Palomeque, Zoe Townsend.

Road(s) and routes per MDRS Map: Cow Dung Road 0110 (0.5km towards the North), you will find attached a plot of the actual GPS track with altitude and speed data (FYI).

Mode of travel: Rovers (Opportunity, Curiosity), Walking
