Sol Summary – December 12th

Sol: 2
Summary Title: Finally on Mars
Author’s name: Cesare Guariniello
Mission Status: Nominal
Sol Activity Summary: after a little delay on Earth yesterday, which provided the crew with some breathtaking stargazing time, crew 288, named after Phobos (in conjunction with the twin crew 289 Deimos), finally woke up on Mars. Ryan, our Green Hab Officer, prepared a tasty and healthy breakfast of oatmeal and dehydrated fruit, flavored with honey and Nutella. Despite the delay in communication between the Earth and Mars, some crew members managed to receive important transmissions, including the questions for a final exam!
And then, finally the first experiences with Extra-Vehicular Activities (EVA). For the first excursion to Marble Ritual, the Executive Officer Riley, Crew Geologist Hunter, and Crew Journalist Lipi suited up and experienced the first rover ride and the first walk outside the habitat in a space suit. Meanwhile, the remaining crew at the habitat listened to the comments by the EVA crew on the geology of the surroundings. After the ingress of the first EVA, the Crew Commander Cesare, Crew Engineer Jesus, Health and Safety Officer Jilian, and Green Hab Officer Ryan donned their suit to reach Marble Ritual and explore the surroundings.
The afternoon was spent playing card games, writing Christmas, and planning for the next days. While working on the daily report, the crew enjoyed a wonderful dinner with mujadara (based on lentils and rice), prepared by Jilian. Funfetti cake is in the oven right now, courtesy of Hunter, and the crew is working hard on their research project.

Anomalies in work: one headset works intermittently.
Weather: Sunny and cold in the morning, increasing clouds in the afternoon.
Crew Physical Status: Everybody is in great health and happy mood.
EVA: Successfully performed two Marble Ritual EVAs today.
Reports to be filed: Sol summary, Journalist report, Operations report, Greenhab report, EVA reports, EVA Request, Astronomy Report, Photos.

GreenHab Report – December 12th

GreenHab Officer: Ryan DeAngelis
Environmental control: Heater on automatically, fan on briefly for ventilation/air flow (approx. at 6:30 pm), door closed.
Average temperatures: 74 deg. Fahrenheit
Hours of supplemental light: 10:30 pm to 2:00 am
Daily water usage for crops: 6 gallons
Daily water usage for research and/or other purposes: Only crop watering
Water in Blue Tank (200 gallon capacity): _180.5_ gallons
Time(s) of watering for crops: 9:00 am, 6:30 pm (split watering)
Changes to crops: Planted peas, rosemary, and fennel
Narrative: We planted a large plot of peas, expanded the existing rosemary plot, and planted fennel. We put damp cardboard over top of the peas as per instructions for the first few days to be blackout. Found the pollinator tool and attempted to use that on the tomatoes. Will try again tomorrow, hopefully one or two of the tomato plants will be fertilized soon. HSO and JOU assisted in the GreenHab today.
Correction to report: I fertilized all the plants in the GreenHab today. I watered a second time because I noticed a couple of the tomato plants were drooping a little, so hopefully the additional water and fertilizer will help them overnight. Will observe and determine if more fertilizer is necessary in the future.
Harvest: No harvest today.
Support/supplies needed: Supplemental lights were observed to turn on at 10:30 pm last night, when it should be from 10 pm onwards – is this alright or should I attempt to adjust back to 10 pm start? Have not validated that it shuts off at 2 am, however I woke up last night at 3 am and the lights were off.

EVA Report – December 12th

EVA # 1
Author: Riley McGlasson
Purpose of EVA: Training EVA to familiarize crew members with rover operation, suits, and navigation.
Start time: 1100
End time: 1230
Narrative: EVA began at 1100 led by Riley (out of sim due to broken leg) and joined by Hunter and Lipi. The crew took Perseverance and Curiosity rovers onto Cow Dung Road and then walked east until Marble Ritual. Perseverance started with 100% charge and 279.3 hours. Curiosity started with 100% charge and 2608 hours. The crew completed the ritual and then continued East to get more comfortable navigating terrain in the EVA suits. The crew stuck to conservative slopes of no more than 10-15 degrees and were comfortable going up and down the small hills near the Marble Ritual site. They also took photos and explored the local geology of the region, with Hunter and Riley teaching Lipi about differential erosion and sediment transport. Hunter gathered some small samples for use in training the rest of the team on how to use the spectrometer. The team made it back to the HAB with Perseverance at 78% charge and 279.4 hours and Curiosity at 82% 260.9 hours. They began the reentry process for the HAB at 1211.
Destination: Marble Ritual
Coordinates (use UTM WGS 84): N518700, E4250800
Participants: Riley McGlasson (Executive Officer), Hunter Vannier (Crew Geologist), Lipi Roy (Crew Journalist)
Road(s) and routes per MDRS Map: Drive on Cow Dung Road and walk east until Marble Ritual.
Mode of travel: driving and walking (Perseverance and Curiosity)

Astronomy Report – December 12th

Astronomy Report
Name: Cesare Guariniello
Crew: 288
Date: 12 Dec 2023

MDRS ROBOTIC OBSERVATORY
Robotic Telescope Requested (choose one) MDRS-WF and MLC-RCOS16
Objects to be Imaged this Evening: PGC69327, M31
Images submitted with this report: None
Problems Encountered: None, the telescopes are imaging right now

MUSK OBSERVATORY
Astronomy laptop and astronomy box are in the right location. The dome operates correctly (first slide is a little noisy out of friction). However, the telescope appeared to have the wrong orientation, as per photo attached. After turning it on, it went to “star alignment”, so I just used “last alignment”, which send it to what usually was the Home Location, aligned with the column and pointing towards the back of the dome. The alignment was very accurate. On sending the telescope back to the Home Location, it went back to the location to which I initially found it, that is sideways. If necessary, I can reset the Home Location to what was the usual location in the past years.

Solar Features Observed: None

Problems Encountered: Telescope seems to have the wrong Home location

Sol Summary – December 11th

Sol: 1
Summary Title: A Muddy Start (Drone Rescue Gone Bad)
Author’s name: Jilian Welshoff
Mission Status: Get prepped to start EVAs, started on Greenhab maintenance
Sol Activity Summary:
We started sol 1 at 7:30 woken by the lovely Apollo 13 music played by Commander Cesare followed by a breakfast of eggs and potatoes made by Jesus and Lipi! We took our time getting ready after breakfast because we were ahead of schedule and then suited up to take sponsor photos at 10:00AM. We took many fun shots for our sponsors and got to try out the drone for video. That is when disaster struck. The drone had flown out of range but was programmed to fly back to the landing zone when it does so. However, that is far from what happened. Cesare and Sergii decided to take the hab car to go retrieve it since it was a very far distance while the rest of the crew got to try on the official EVA suits, take more photos, and get adjusted to moving in them.
After we had gotten close to our original sim start time, the crew decided to come inside for lunch, not including Cesare who was still on the Rescue Mission for the drone. We had an assortment of snacks for lunch including honey-roasted peanuts, bananas with peanut butter, and a newfound snack of graham crackers with Nutella and freeze-dried blueberries and strawberries. Completing lunch we got correspondence from Cesare. Yet another disaster had struck. After reaching the drone’s destination, the hab car got stuck! Cesare and Sergii tried to release the car by themselves but needed some extra hands and requested help. This officially put EVA #1 and EVA #2 on hold. We waited for Cesare and Sergii to walk back, and then sent Jesus and Ryan to go help! They took Sergii’s car and after a lumpsum of time, they made it back! Officially, it was too late to go on any EVA, but we were able to start on other tasks including working with the Greenhouse. Ryan, our HSO, Lipi, and I went to the Greenhouse and were able to harvest some plants, decide on what to plant next, and water what was already there!
We had a long day with many challenges and changes but morale is high and dinner is cooking!
Look Ahead Plan: Start EVA and sim officially. We plan to get more used to suits and go to Marble Ritual to start us off. We hope to set up CO2 sensors and plant peas tomorrow to get research started!
Anomalies in work: Lost drone and stuck hab car!
Weather: Sunny with some streaky clouds! Beautiful!
Crew Physical Status: People retrieving the drone and car have some fatigue and Lipi had a headache.
EVA: #1 and #2 were not completed but will be tomorrow.
Reports to be filed: Sol Summary Report, Mission Plan, Operations Report, Green Hab report, Journalist Report, EVA Request, Astronomy Report
Support Requested: Coffee grounds (instant or grounds), chicken bouillon, powdered milk } all were at lower supply level when arriving, not in dire need of.
