Notes on non-nominal systems: The light bulb in the EVA preparation room died and we replaced it with the one on the shelf in the lower floor of HAB. The new one died a few hours later. Yesterday we had a dead light bulb in one of the rooms. This might be due to faulty light bulbs, but it might also be related to surges in the power distribution system.

Notes on ATVs: [From Director] Long time mystery solved! I discovered the issue with why the Honda sometimes does not start: the kill switch is activated by pushing it either hard to the left or right and must be in the middle for the engine to turn over. Adding to this confusion, the thing will try to turn over when the kill switch is selected, while with all the Yamahas when the kill switch in on, they won’t even try to start.

Summary Title: Exploring martian territory.

Mission Status: Two EVAs today. That’s tiring!

Sol Activity Summary: Crew 212’s first day on Mars! Commander reports some colon problems (no questions, please, she’ll just need more veggies). EVAs were done. Now we have an idea of how much time takes the pre-EVA process. That’ll help us in the future.

Look Ahead Plan: More science during EVAs.

Anomalies in work: We have lamp issues (check the operations report)

Weather: Sunny at 8 a.m. Kinda fresh at 3 p.m. For the late EVA, it was still sunny and windy.

Crew Physical Status: So far, no accidents.

Notes on non-nominal systems: The loft pump in the Hab is leaking
badly, and water penetrated the wooden floor down in the commander’s
room. The leaking is due to parts of the pump not being completely
fixed to each other and is triggered mainly by vibrations during
activity; water both drops on the wooden floor but also sprays upwards
close to electrical connections.

probably has to be detached from the main system, disassembled and

Journalist Report – May 5th

Good Evening,

Today was our second day at MDRS. Our day today consisted of training and settling into the HAB station.

Our crew deep cleaned the HAB and took full inventory of the food and also the Greenhab produce. Here we saw that there are numerous plants ready to be harvested, we hope to use the carrots over the next couple of days.

Afterwards we did a water run in Hanksville, we will return tonight for the second water run.

Finally we undertook Rover training and went out with Shannon to URC North Site, all crew members drove and turned the rovers.

Tonight we will eat a final meal at Hankville before entering SIM tomorrow.

We look forward to the start of the simulation.

Summary Title: Mars being Mars

Mission Status: Tired after scrubing, brooming and washing. Excited after using rovers.

Sol Activity Summary: Crew 212 passed their first night in the hab. So far, nothing interesting happened during the night. We cleaned all the Hab, from the kitchen to downstairs to the toilet… It was hard work. We also had our training using the rovers. Surely a hard day.

Look Ahead Plan: Tomorrow, we’ll wake up in Mars!

Anomalies in work: Opportunity was having its overheating problem during the training.

Weather: Cloudy and quite windy at 3-4 p.m.

Crew Physical Status:So far, no accidents.

EVA: No EVAs today!

Science Report – May 07th

Crew 212 – LATAM III

1. Solar Observation/Astrophotography/Stellar Clusters: The procedure of turning on the MUSK telescope and the dome has been successfully tested. Observations of a galaxy were made with the deep sky objects robotic telescope.

2. X-5: Drones were disassembling for transportation to MDRS: 2 on 3 drones already assembled. Calibration performed. Manual test of 2 on 3 drones scheduled for SOL-3.

3. VESTA: Performing a repair in the landing gear of the drone. First flight test scheduled for May, 09 (SOL 4).

4. Observation Rover: The EVA for today May, 7 (SOL 2) was canceled due to the weather.. A part of the Rover got missing in transit from Grand Junction to MDRS. Critical Component. Solution needed ASAP: Stablish contact with UK.

5. Space Farming: Experiment in standby due to the lack of an operational autoclave. Solution: Dr. Shannon Rupert has explained how to sterilize using a hotplate, alcohol, and bleach.

6. Keep Talking: First round already performed. Subsequent rounds already scheduled.

7. Ethnography study: First observation started yesterday (SOL-1). Waiting for sending audio-information to receive the feedback from the Colombian team project.

8. Pulse Oximeter Measurement: First measurement made yesterday. Data recorded.

9. Software for macroscopic characterization: Code for detecting counts in progress. There is an issue with detecting the petri dish. Solution: process more photographs needed (soil bacteria growing in plates).
