SOL11: Happy birthday Agnès
Today is Agnes’ birthday!
This morning part of the crew left for 2 missions; the first one is to go and look for the bacteria of Agnes which stayed in the Martian environment for several days to be able to analyze them later. The second mission was to finalize the data of Thomas to have identified the radiation rate of all his maps.
We then had a call with the Mars Society Belgium to discuss our project and our experiences.
After a good meal, the team prepared a surprise for Agnes, while Thomas occupied Agnes elsewhere, we put the cakes on the table to wish her a happy birthday and enjoy a delicious dessert.
In the afternoon a second part of the team went to EVA, we came back to Candor Chasma to find the cavities that Augustin had found while doing his mapping. A superb outing in an incredible setting.
We finished our last evening of simulation all together, very tired but very happy of this incredible project. Stay tuned, tomorrow will be our last report for our last day in the station.
Sol Summary – April 13th
Crew 279 Sol Summary Report 13-04-2023
Sol: 11
Summary Title: Roller Coaster
Author’s name: Antoine de Barquin , Crew Commander
Mission Status: Nominal
Sol Activity Summary:
Today was a very productive day for us! We managed to complete two experiments with great success. Agnes ventured to the top of the North Ridge to collect her bacteria, and everything went smoothly. During the excursion, we even had the opportunity to capture some stunning images with a drone. Once back at the Hab thanks to the rovers, we made the last measurements for Thomas’ experiment right next to the Hab. All in all, a job well done!
The second EVA of the day was at Candor Chasma for the rest of the team. This expedition was important to confirm the presence of a cave identified upstream by Augustin’s mapping of the area. We found the cave ( cfr photos of the day ) which confirms the operating protocol of Augustin’s experiment. The four members of the crew stayed in the Hab to prepare the end of the simulation and their experience.
Look Ahead Plan:
For our last Sol on Mars, an EVA is planned in the region of Charitum Montes to finish the Augustin’s mapping. While the rest of the team will finish its experiment in the morning. The afternoon will be reserved for the tidying of the station.

EVA Report – April 13th
Crew 279 EVA Report 13-04-2023
EVA #12
Author: Agnès Dekeyser, Crew Executive Officer
Purpose of EVA:
The goal was to recover Agnes’ bacteria samples in North Ridge that we put in 5 days ago. She will bring them back to the Science Dome where their viability will be assessed and compared to their unexposed analog. Antoine was in support to carry the bacteria
This EVA was the last for Thomas’ experience. He had to take radioactivity measurements near the base with his detector. Thanks to a scintillator, he made punctual measurements of radioactivity (gamma emission) every 10 meters. He only had one zone left South-West from Hab (he aims for 50-100 measurements). His route was like a snake shape: (North (250m)-West (10m)-South (250m)-West (10m)-North (250m) and so on).
It was difficult to make measurements with only 1 person in support during the last EVA so he was helped by Agnes and Augustin who took note and guided him in his tracing with a GPS.
Start time: 8h14
End time: 11h59
Narrative:
The day started very early without the pancakes planned in the morning due to the difficulty the crew had in waking up. Anyway, some cereals did the trick to give energy to our martionauts going to EVA. They began their journey with the North Ridge to recover Agnès’ samples. Her bacteria samples have been placed there since Sol 5 to be exposed to Mars’ extreme condition and are now analysed in the science dome to assess their viability. They also took some time to enjoy the view one last time before going back to the rovers to begin Thomas’ experiment. Next to the rovers, our martionauts were photographed by some very curious martians.
After that, they drove back to the MDRS and transmitted the rover’s parameters to the Hab. Then, they went to the first GPS coordinates and began radioactivity measurements. Unfortunately, the scintillator was not working and they lost a bit of time to make it work. After changing the battery, it seemed to work and they were able to take all the measurements needed.
They came back in time to the Hab and both missions were a success.
Destination: North Ridge and Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS)

Road(s) and routes per MDRS Map: Cow Dung Road 0110
Mode of travel: Drive on Cow Dung Road 0110 to North Ridge then walking on the top of North Ridge. Then driving back to MDRS and walking no further than 300 meters.
EVA #13
Author : Aglaé Sacré, Crew journalist
Purpose of EVA:
Extensive mapping of Candor Chasma was carried out during SOL 6. Upon reprocessing the images, several intriguing locations were identified for the GHO’s experiment. Notably, certain cavities were found that may offer protection against radiation for human beings. Following measurements taken from a 3D model and instruction from Augustin, the EVA crew intended to validate his model’s effectiveness by localisation accuracy for a crew who haven’t seen the 3D map and performing identical measurements on-site. Ttele and Aglaé were to be the delegates of this mission.
Gwenael, our cameraman, had to be present to take beautiful shots in Candor Chasma for our sponsors, our networks and Belgian media who had requested an idyllic location. Antoine had to be there to help Gwenael carry the equipment and install everything to be efficient and save time.
Start time: 2:24pm
End time: 5:10pm
Narrative:
After a first mapping of the area by our GHO Augustin, the goal of this EVA was following measurements taken from a 3D model and instruction from Augustin, the EVA crew intended to validate his model’s effectiveness by localisation accuracy for a crew who don’t have seen the 3D map and performing identical measurements on-site.
We were able to find one and take the necessary steps.
The objectives of the EVA were completed, and interesting cavities were found. We also took the last images needed for our report.
We advanced several tens of minutes from the Candor Chasma and then we went back to the rover to join the station.
The EVA Crew was back at the Hab at 17:10.
Destination: Candor Chasma
Coordinates (use UTM WGS 84): 521500 E ,4251000 N
Participants: Aglaé (EVA Leader) (Journalist), Ttele (HSO), Gwenael (Astronomer), Antoine (commander)
Road(s) and routes per MDRS Map: Cow Dung Road 0110 and Galileo Road 1104
Mode of travel: Drive on Cow Dung Road 0110 and Galileo Road 1104 to Compass Rock then walking to Candor Chasma.

Summary Title: Sadly, close to the end…
Author’s name: Agnès Dekeyser, Crew Executive Officer
Mission Status: Nominal
Sol Activity Summary:
This morning the boys woke up early for their EVA. The Crew Scientist made some radioactivity measurements in the canyon with the help of the Commander while the GHO and Crew astronomers made some drone mapping of the area. They didn’t find any isotope but the mapping was a success.
In the meantime, the girls took some time to rest. They also cooked a delicious lunch with homemade hummus, pepper tapenade, and cheesy bread, for the great pleasure of the boys.
Right after lunch, a second team got prepared for their EVA to Kissing Camel Ridge W. They drove there and began to look for the cavities found by the GreenHab Officer on his 3D map made by drone mapping on EVA #4. They measured the cavities to check if the measurements were correct on the 3D map. They also found other cavities that didn’t appear on the 3D map. So, they enjoyed the time they had left to make another mapping. They also took the measurements of those cavities to make the same comparison as previously. Our Crew Executive Officer also took the opportunity to take some earth samples to see if she could find some martian microorganisms and compare their viability to one of her extremophiles.
The end of the afternoon was dedicated to everyone’s experiments before getting ready for the reports. Another productive day for our martionauts.
Look Ahead Plan:
Arriving at the end of the mission, our martionauts only have small things to take care of for their experiments. Tomorrow, the Crew Executive Officer will organise an EVA in order to collect her bacteria samples left in North Ridge and bring them back to the science dome where their viability will be assessed and compared to their unexposed analog. After that, the Crew Scientist will finish his radioactivity measurements around the MDRS. He still has 100 measurements to do around the MDRS and it should only take one morning to perform.
Apart from that the crew will continue their own experiments including the 3D printing of drone propellers and the analysis of their data.
