Campus wide inspection, if action taken, what and why? Erosion of the hill I try to keep people off is getting worse both by the station and at the Outpost. In addition, the gully created by the placement of the ScienceDome is about 9 inches deep and cutting through the driveway.

Summary of general operations: nothing to report

Summary of Hab operations: Nothing to report.

Summary of Outpost operations: nothing to report

Summary of GreenHab operations: Inga wins my “I would definitely go to Mars with them” award. The new watering can may be metal, so it won’t get brittle and break, but it’s about as subtle as a fire hose! Not good for watering young plants. I will order a better one, with more refined and gentler watering capabilities.

Operations Report Oct 08th – 10th

MDRS Operations Report 8-10-OCT-2021

Name of person filing report: Shannon Rupert

Reason for Report: Routine

Non-nominal systems: Complete Failure of Power System occurred on Saturday the 9th at 6 am.

Action taken for non-nominal systems: On Saturday, we awoke to a brownout, which is something that isn’t supposed to happen with our system and has never happened before. After about ten minutes of this, we lost power. SOC was 16%. One of the power controllers had tripped its breaker, but I didn’t know when, so nothing to do but resent it and wait until sunrise. Once the sun was up, all three charge controllers returned to nominal operations. I attempted to use the generator before sunrise but my first attempt failed. I changed the generator control to autostart, knowing the generator was programmed for autostart. It started well, but struggled and lagged, finally backfiring and quitting. The autostart was cancelled so will need to be reprogrammed on the generator before it can be used again. Error read undervolt L1-2. I attempted a second manual start but the generator turned itself off in a minute. So we waited for the sun to confirm the solar system was working. It was but we still weren’t getting power. My second attempt to restart the inverters worked and the system has been functional since. In the meantime, I restarted the generator with the breaker off and it ran well, then I flipped the breaker with the SOC at 30% and the generator did not struggle. I turned the generator off so I could clean and check it before putting it in service again. For the next few days I will once again run on solar only until this is done then I will test the system again.

Generator: Run three times on Oct 7 during a power failure.

ScienceDome Dual Split: Off

Notes on ATVs: Nothing to report

HabCar used and why, where? No

CrewCar used and why, where? Yes, to deliver crew to Grand Junctoin

Luna used and why, where? Yes, to town

General notes and comments: CrewCar needs repair before next crew arrives. Running well, but needs work on the undercarriage. The HabCar’s windshield has been scratched so much that it is difficult to see through it when the window isn’t cleaned. The windshield washer tank is broken so people have just been clearing and scratching it without any fluids.

Summary of internet: All accounts are nominal.

Summary of suits and radios: Nothing to report

Campus wide inspection, if action taken, what and why? Diesel tank removed, remaining spill containment system needs to be removed.

Summary of general operations: Diesel tank has been removed from campus. Old blackwater tank has been transferred to the trailer for disposal.

Summary of Hab operations: Nothing to report.

Summary of Outpost operations: Propane detector in director’s trailer malfunctioned after power failure and was removed. During removal, the fuse to the water pump failed. This is an amazingly short story for what was a really long and interesting learning experience. The thermostats in both trailers were replaced and the heating unit in the intern trailer was reinstalled after being cleaned and checked.

Ethanol Free Gasoline – 1 gallons

Water (loft tank): 35 gallons. From the dimensions I calculated this to have a 60 gallon full to top of main tank capacity. The numbers written on one end are in close enough agreement with that. So, from that our water usage has been 25-30 gal/day on average. The water meter says 32 gal/day.

Notes on rovers: Adaptions to protect the spacesuits have remained intact and functional.

ATV’s Used: (Honda, 350.1, 350.2, 350.3): All four were started and checked.

Reason for use: routine maintenance

Oil Added? Yes, to 350.1

ATV Fuel Used: 4 Gals

# Hours the ATVs were Used today: 0.25

Notes on ATVs: Both of the Honda’s rear tires are flat. I need to take them off and see if they are repairable. The oil is dirty on all four. They need to have a full tuneup and oil change. 350.2 runs well but is too dangerous to use. 350.3 needed the bolts on the battery tightened.

HabCar used and why, where? Yes, to town to pick up the trailer from storage and bring it back to campus

CrewCar used and why, where? Yes, to town to fill up with gas to turn it over to the crew. Also used to go get COVID test in Grand Junction.

Luna used and why, where? Yes, to town

General notes and comments: People were adding trash to the trailer where it was parked at storage so I went and picked it up. I had some trouble with the hitch but some people in town helped me with it. Lugs on the tires were also tightened, however the rear of the two axles has been bent in the past and needs replaced.

Summary of internet: All accounts are nominal.

Summary of suits and radios: Suits good, but sometimes charger connector to EVA suit needs jiggling to charge. Looks like same problem and same type connectors I saw here in 2009. The newer barrel connector style might work better. 5 radio batteries have been identified as not suitable for further use and will be removed from the hab so no other crew will have to fuss with them. 3 radios have been identified as faulty and labeled. They are on the second shelf down on the radio table in lower hab. There are just enough batteries remaining for all the working radios. Likely a few more batteries may not be up to par as I did not test all. The tested good batteries will run a radio in transmit on high power for ~25 minutes continuously. Intermittently my guess is ~30 minutes.

Campus wide inspection, if action taken, what and why?

Summary of general operations: No significant worries.

Summary of Hab operations: Replaced loft tank and portable kitchen water jug filters. Toilet leak is ~ 2 gal/day of potable (I assume) water .

Summary of Outpost operations: Transfer of the construction trash from the work party has begun. Director Trailer blackwater emptied.

Summary of GreenHab operations: All good except purple watering can was damaged. Still works.

Summary of ScienceDome operations: DNA sequencing on regolith samples on going.

Summary of RAM operations: No action.

Summary of any observatory issues: Robotic observatory is down.

Summary of health and safety issues: Everything good.

Questions, concerns, supplies needed and requests: I need to put two weird little metal pieces on the trailer to attach the new VIN number. They look like thumb tacks but instead of a skinny metal pin they have a thick, blunt metal pins divided into fourths. Can anyone help me with this? How do these things work? (Shannon) If trailer is on campus I can look after sim. I don’t know how from your description. Since it’s for a VIN maybe it’s some permanent attachment that requires force and tools to place into holes (Dave)

Summary of internet: All accounts are nominal. Speed has been good with the new system.

Summary of suits and radios: Some radio rechargeable batteries are not holding enough charge during EVA. Started testing while transmitting today as a demanding test under load. Seeing a big difference among batteries. There are likely enough to get us through the mission. Will put poor batteries in labeled bag and report numbers needed as replacements to get all functional phones batteries. Will also test batteries found in a bag. This will take a few days to test all of them. After we tried on the two types of EVA suits upon arrival I forgot to mention that the 2-piece had superior air flow, enough for any occasion I can imagine. The 1-piece we are using have had enough air flow thus far.

Campus wide inspection, if action taken, what and why?

Summary of general operations: Satisfactory

Summary of Hab operations: Nominal. It would be nice during a remodel to add a large clock to each level. Looming over us they would help us stay on our schedules.

Luna used and why, where? Yes, but only moved on campus

General notes and comments: Nothing to report

Summary of internet: All old accounts are nominal. New service still not working.

Summary of suits and radios: We tried on both styles. All of us picked the single piece unit. The two piece is too flawed. The lower helmet ring is too far forward as it causes the head to be forced against the back of head restricting movement and constant muscle tension against it. Also, the rear ring clamps are forced against the frame making them difficult to open or close. On some helmets the upper ring front down-pointing latch section is bent backward causing it not to engage lower clamp mate. That is easily fixed with pliers, but every time the helmet is set down the front rests upon that small piece. We would send photos if requested. Regarding the one piece, unit 7 had no fan when switched on. One battery connector had slipped off a battery terminal. Reattachment was firm, but since it came off, I will make it hold better tomorrow by crimping the female connector. One radio has suddenly become erratic and unusable. With an in-situ crew of 4, we have spares.

Campus wide inspection, if action taken, what and why? Nothing to report

Summary of general operations: RAM and SciDome were cleaned. Four signs built by the work party had pier blocks attached and they were deployed-two along Cow Dung Road stating where our land begins and ends, and two on the driveways to restrict unauthorized personnel from driving to the station. So far tourist reactions are mixed.

Summary of ScienceDome operations: Building was cleaned today but still some things to do before it is complete

Summary of RAM operations: Organized and cleaned. Tools used to assemble 4 heavy warning signs.

Summary of any observatory issues: Robotic observatory is down.

Summary of health and safety issues: All crew nominal.

Questions, concerns, supplies needed and requests: A few food items to come. Body temp thermometer coming. Smoke detector for RAM requested.

CrewCar used and why, where? No

Luna used and why, where? Yes, to Grand Junction for supplies

General notes and comments: Holes were dug for the new signs, however, we were unable to purchase the pier blocks needed for the completion of this project.

Summary of internet: All nominal.

Summary of suits and radios: Nothing to report

Campus-wide inspection, if action is taken, what and why? Nothing to report

Summary of general operations: Nothing to report

Summary of Hab operations: Water tank and cleaned and repainted with a thick layer of elastomeric paint. The bottom had deteriorated and will need to be repaired. I have a plan to replace the lower inch or so with foam tubbing and then repaint.

Summary of Outpost operations: Water tank and cleaned and repainted with a thick layer of elastomeric paint. This tank in particular had a minimum coat of paint with many spots where the foam was exposed, so we are hoping this will protect it. The tank also needs the bottom inch or so redone.

Summary of GreenHab operations: The floor was power washed.

Summary of ScienceDome operations: Nothing to report. If the weather holds, later this week we will do a final coat on the lower portion to create a thicker coat of paint there.

Summary of RAM operations: Nothing to report

Summary of any observatory issues: Nothing to report

Summary of health and safety issues: The cement pad in the back of the Hab cracked a long time ago but this summer the rains lifted in half and there is about a one-inch lift on one side. Not much can be done but warning paint will be applied.

Questions, concerns, supplies needed and requests: Nothing at this time.
