MDRS Crew 220 Sol 4 Summary 23Jan2020

Summary Title: Target acquired?
Author’s name: Shawna Pandya, Commander
Mission Status: Nominal
Sol Activity Summary: Today was a busy day as both crews ran joint EVA exercises in the morning and afternoon with the goal of scouting injury sites for future medical simulations on EVA, followed by a tour of the MAU station. The morning EVA went smoothly, with 2 injury sites (IS) easily found and demarcated.. The afternoon EVA teams, based on the instructions of the morning EVA team found both IS, but then had to end their EVA early due to several comms failure. All in all, the morning and afternoon EVAs achieved the desired objectives, setting the stage for future medical EVAs. Within the Hab, the team continued to bring the surveys, tech and science back online that had previously been disrupted with the loss of Internet.Look Ahead Plan: Tomorrow’s EVAs will consist of medical drills at the injury sites identified today and briefing on medical triage, assessment and communication protocols in the field.
Anomalies in work: Hot water still out.
Weather: -5C low / 2C max, 0C average, 20% chance of precipitation tomorrow
Crew Physical Status: Excellent
EVA: 1 AM MDRS EVA and 1 PM MDRS EVA performed today as above

Title: Snow and Dancing on Mars

At 0700 we rose for the morning to a slow flurry of Martian snow that had just started falling. We sat together enjoying the scenery while eating a breakfast of oatmeal and coffee. Starting at 0900 the Martian snow decided to pick up its pace, so we worked together to make sure that everything was secured and well prepared for the Martian elements.

Following the securing of the hab, we sat back down to enjoy some story telling and hab activities. We all enjoyed the opportunity to continue to learn from and about one another and planning for hab improvements for the next Sol.

In the evening, we met up with the MDRS crew at their hab for a Mars Circle activity between the two habs, for having our biometrics checked and enjoying a delicious shepherds pie dinner that one of the MDRS crew members whipped up for us from the freeze dried food. And, to top the night off, we had an joyful night of music and dancing between the two crews where we learned how to waltz, two-step, and a dance from India.

Summary of Internet: While restoring Hab power the Internet router failed to power up properly. After several attempts to reboot the router, Outpost was contacted and advised of the concern. The router was sent to them, and they are working on repairing or replacing it. Two crew members from the MAU team brought a router that they had in their possession and installed it as a temporary replacement, with the permission of Outpost.

Summary of Suits and Radios: No EVAs were conducted from MDRS today, but crew members drilled in donning and doffing procedures. Suits and radios are all charging after restoration of power, and all systems appear to be operating nominally.

Summary of Hab Operations: We were still in emergency operations for the first portion of the day, but power was restored with a standby rental generator at approximately 0900. The decision was made to restore power to electrical systems with a staggered ramp up, beginning with radio comms, then suits, rovers, and Internet, and then full load after the SOC was stable above 50%. All systems appear to be operating nominally at this time. Our crew is extremely grateful for the dedicated effort of the Outpost team in restoring power for us.
