Even in these cases we will follow the instructions given for Suit 3, unless stopped by MDRS Support.

Journalist Report – April 19th

(sator arepo tenet opera rotas)
Crew 245 Journalist report 19 April 2022
Sol: 09
Name of person filling the report: Dr Benjamin Pothier

Our sol 9 might have gone upside down and from 9 to 6 due to the heavy winds that we had to face this afternoon. It was in fact so heavy that no teams went on EVA and even at some point in the afternoon I think that everyone had to take a little nap just to enjoy the comfort of our private room where the sound of the exterior was less loud.

I was in fact the first to wake up very early this morning in order to catch the sunrise from the bay window of the science Lab in order to take some time lapse and still photos.

As I said the afternoon was very windy and when not taking a nap crew members took care of their experiment and duties. Most of us at some point went to see Simone working in the science lab on his DNA research on the soil samples he had been collecting conscientiously for the past few days, like Arepo leading the plough with his hand. So in a way maybe the wind indeed pushed our sol 9 upside down, but by our work we made it full circle and back to its starting position, in a full 360°, like the spherical images of my 360 camera that I am currently processing .

A full circle, yes, that was a great day on Mars.

EVA Report – April 19th

Crew 245 EVA Report 19-04-2022
SOL: 9
EVA #: 12
Author: Vittorio Netti

Purpose of EVA: First EVA of the spit cortisol test.
Start time: 07:45
End time: 10:00
Narrative: This EVA was part of 4 EVAs to evaluate the cortisol levels in 2 crew members before and after an EVA, with or without the help of a detailed map of the area obtained previously with a drone. In this EVA, Vittorio navigated between 2 waypoints with the official MDRS map (the other crew member will have a GPS in case). The EVA team walked in the beautiful landscape, trying to find their way to the arrival waypoint. Once reached, they went back to the rover and got back to the Hab.
Destination: North Ridge
Coordinates (UTM NAD27 CONUS): 4251500 N; 518500 E
Participants: Vittorio Netti (EVA Commander), Nadia Marouff (EVA HSO)
Road(s) and routes per MDRS Map: Cow Dung road
Mode of travel: Rover and Walking

The EVA team walked in the beautiful landscape, trying to find their way to the arrival waypoint. Once reached, they went back to the rover and returned to the Hab.

Sol Summary – April 19th

Crew 245 Sol Summary Report 19-04-2022
SOL: 9
Summary Title: Nominal ops
Author’s name: Paolo Guardabasso

Mission status: The majority of the experiments proceed nominally, with some issues here and there.

Sol Activity Summary: The day was dedicated to EVAs in the morning (before the wind rose) and to sample and data processing in the afternoon, with a bit of relax. We also (sadly) started managing the logistics for our return to Earth.

Look Ahead Plan: Tomorrow we’ll once again dedicate the morning to EVAs, and spend the afternoon most likely similar to today, working on experiments and logistics.

Anomalies in work: We observed a non-nominal behaviour in Suit 1 (air only at maximum), and we performed some troubleshooting.

Weather: Good weather, although increasingly windy. Temperature 9 (low) and 29 (high) C, Wind speed 43 (avg) and 64 (max) kph

Crew Physical Status: We’re starting to feel the effects of the hot season. One crew member was denied EVA because of high BP.

EVA: Two consecutive EVAs have been performed. They represent the first part of two parts of the stress level experiment, where 2 crew members will have to explore and navigate an area with and without a digital map previously generated with a drone.

Reports to be filled:
– HSO report
– Operation report
– Journalist report
– Some pictures + picture of the day
– EVA request (2)
– EVA report (2)

Support Requested: None at the moment.
